Women

It is said that the Sarmatian women enjoyed special consideration. If the Sarmatian ancestry of the Poles is true, it is no wonder that women in Poland also enjoyed special consideration.

Let us start with the custom of kissing women on the hand when greeting them. This custom is dying out with the younger generation following the customs of the West where women are treated as "equals" and therefore without special considerations, but until recently if a man did not kiss a woman's hand when greeting her, he was regarded as boorish or at least ill-mannered.

Perhaps the special attention given to women is also connected with the specific cult of the Mother of God, which has no equivalent in other Christian countries, and which may also be strengthened by Polish history. For example, the Jasna Gora Monastery, a Marian sanctuary with a mysterious painting of the Virgin Mary surrounded by legend, was the only place that was not conquered by the enemy during the so-called Swedish Deluge, despite the vast superiority of the enemy forces.

Women played an extraordinary role in the history of Poland, because on the one hand their place was "by the man's side", while on the other hand it was the men who were courting women, who fought duels and committed many follies, which, however, was forgivable in company, because if it was for a woman, you could go wild.

However, it was not only about romance, as women could actively and courageously participate even in battles against overwhelming enemy forces, of which women's participation in the Warsaw Uprising is a vivid example from not so distant times, whose history is full of wonderful women characters.

Until recently, it was unthinkable for a woman dining at a restaurant at the same table with a man, even one she barely knew, to pay for her dinner. The man paid. Again, this custom is disappearing in the younger generation, which draws from "equal rights" countries the custom that everyone pays for himself, and if a woman there agrees to have a man pay her bill it almost means an invitation to bed.

It cannot be excluded, however, that the process drawn from modern customs

"equal rights" of women will deprive women in Poland of these special gender considerations and, as one of the outstanding artists of the Polish scenes sang : "a steamroller will come and level".
